I have the Instant Pot, but so far the only accessory I have purchased is this Egg Steamer Rack for hard-boiled eggs. I’ll have to show you how I do that in another blog post. It’s so easy!

For Irish Soda Bread, I was not quite sure how to cook the dough inside the Instant Pot. I needed a container that could fit inside the Instant Pot and be able to withstand its mighty cooking powers. Enter my Stainless Steel canister. It is the perfect size to sit inside my Instant Pot and hold the dough with enough room for the bread to rise up as it bakes.

As you can see from the photo above, the bread takes the shape of the canister and then just sort of does its own thing at the top.

Look around your kitchen and see if you have something to cook the Irish Soda Bread dough in. A stainless steel canister, a clean coffee can, and even a Pyrex bowl would probably work, as long as it fits inside your Instant Pot. You will also need aluminum foil to cover the top of the inner container.

Cover the top of the canister with aluminum foil as shown in the photo above. Leave it a little looser at the top in case the bread dough needs to rise up taller. My finished bread did not go higher than the rim of my canister.

This Instant Pot Irish Soda Bread recipe has the same ingredients as a traditional Irish Soda Bread, but obviously cooks in a completely different way. Instant Pot breads are steamed instead of baked. I think it was fun to make Irish Soda bread in the Instant Pot. Now I know it can be done! It tastes good, too.

I would describe this Irish Soda bread’s texture as dense, soft and chewy in a good way. The flavor is not sweet (although I did add a little sugar to the dough to help cancel out any bitterness from the wheat flour.)

This hearty bread would pair perfectly with an Irish Stew or your Corned Beef and Cabbage meal. Grill slices or put them under the broiler to toast them if you like.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 4 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1.5 cups Buttermilk (plus a little more if needed)

Servings: loaf (about 8 slices)

Instructions

  1. Combine all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Stir in buttermilk and use your hands to knead the dough until it is able to be made into a ball. Note: If your dough is still too dry to stick together in a ball, add more Buttermilk, a tablespoon at a time, and knead until you can form a dough ball.

  2. Generously spray the inside of your stainless steel canister (or container you will use to cook the dough) with nonstick cooking spray. Place the dough ball inside the canister. Cover the top of the canister with foil and set it inside the Instant Pot.

  3. Add water to the Instant Pot to fill it halfway up the sides of your inner cooking container. Close and lock the Instant Pot lid.

  4. Program the Instant Pot to cook for 25 minutes at High Pressure. When the cook time has finished, open the Instant Pot with the Natural Release Method. This takes about 10 minutes.

  5. Remove the inner canister from the Instant Pot and take off the foil. Carefully turn the canister upside down and the bread loaf should slide out. Put the loaf on a cooling rack and allow it to cool 10-15 minutes before slicing.

  6. Serve warm with butter.
