Samhain pumpkin bread is kind of a no-brainer, isn’t it?

Pumpkins. Pumpkin spice. Warm, home-cooked bread.

It’s perfect for the season, and a real crowd-pleaser.

This bread is perfect at all times of day. It’s a slice of heaven in the morning, but it can also be the perfect shared dessert during a Samhain potluck.

Pumpkin bread can also bring us closer to the memory of our ancestors.

It helps remind us that we are part of a long lineage, and that our modern world is very disconnected from nature.

Baking Bread During Samhain

Bread is a traditional baked good for Samhain. After all, this is a harvest festival.

This festival takes place just before all of the plants begin to die.

The colder air would have brought no small amount of fear to our ancestors.

They would wonder if their family would survive the coming winter. Maybe they would have been afraid that the sun wouldn’t return in the spring.

While Samhain is a time of abundance, where our food storage is overflowing with the fruits of the summer, it is also a time of preparation and ritual for the sun god.

Baking bread is one of many ways that we honor the sun’s energy.

We take some of the wheat we have stored for the winter and use it to feed our friends and our family.

And, if we leave some as an offering on our Samhain altar or outside, it is used to feed the spirits and the gods.

Baking bread for Samhain, then, is one way to reconnect with our ancestors and with the earth.

We recognize the earth’s bounties, and at the same time we recognize that we are coming into a leaner time.

When should you bake Samhain bread?

Traditionally, the bread is baked on October 30th, the night before Samhain.

If you invite friends over to bake with you, this is also a time of drinking mead and being merry.

Of course, if you’re alone this Samhain, you can still drink with the spirits.

Why You Should Make Samhain Pumpkin Bread

Samhain bread takes the fruits of the sun god’s power (wheat, pumpkin, herbs grown in the sun) and repackages it so that it can nourish us and the spirits around us.

Plus, it’s really tasty!

I recommend making more than one loaf of this bread.

Have enough to more than feed any guests you may have for Samhain, plus enough to offer to the gods and spirits.

The veil between the mortal world and the world of spirits and deities becomes thinner during Samhain.

That means offerings will appease negative spirits, while also nourishing positive spirits.

These offerings are essential to keep those negative spirits away from you and your family during the dark and cold months of winter.

You should also bake this bread, or any bread, to honor your ancestors.

Connect with them. Remember their hardships, and tell stories of the ones you remember.

And don’t forgive to give thanks as you share this bread with loved ones.

Be thankful for the ingredients, and for your ancestors, and for the sun’s energy.

How To Customize This Samhain Pumpkin Bread

Pumpkin breads can be customized in many ways!

For instance, some pumpkin breads are topped with a cream cheese frosting.

Or you can change the nuts included in the bread, or leave the nuts out altogether.

If you will be making more than one loaf of this Samhain pumpkin bread, experiment with the ingredients a bit.

Of course, don’t stray too far from the basic ingredients or you might have a disaster on your hands.

But you can decide what topping goes on the bread, or if it will have nuts, or how much cinnamon will be put in it.

Vintage Pumpkin Bread Recipe

This bonus recipe comes from Lettice Byan in The Kentucky Housewife. It’s a recipe from 1839!

Pumpkin breads at that time were less sweet, and used cornmeal instead of flour.

Making this recipe is a great way to honor your ancestors with a traditional bread they are more likely to recognize.

These will be more like pancakes than a loaf, but they are still an interesting and delicious treat.

FAQs

Why is my pumpkin bread not cooking in the middle? ›

The oven temperature is off: Usually it's running too hot, and the outside looks brown before the center is baked through. But a low oven temperature can fool you too– you think you've baked long enough, but it's actually running 50 degrees too cool.

Can you put pumpkin bread back in the oven? ›

In most situations, an undercooked loaf of bread can be fixed by returning it to the oven for a few more minutes. This is true for loaves where the outside of your bread may look fully set, but the inside of the bread is still gummy. Place the loaf back in a preheated oven at 350° F for 10-20 minutes.

Can I use baking powder instead of baking soda in banana bread? ›

Baking powder is the best substitute for baking soda in banana bread, but if you want to make banana bread without baking soda or powder, you may also find success swapping in self rising flour.

What happens if you use too much baking soda in pumpkin bread? ›

It's important not to use too much baking soda in recipes, as it can result in a metallic, soapy flavor. It is much more powerful than baking powder – you only need about 1/4 teaspoon baking soda per cup of flour to leaven baked goods.

Why is my pumpkin bread not moist? ›

There are a number of reasons your pumpkin bread came out dry. It's possible the particular flour you used was extra “thirsty” for liquid. Try cutting the amount of flour, or adding more milk. It's also possible your oven was too hot, or you baked the pumpkin bread for too long.

What happens if you put too much pumpkin in pumpkin bread? ›

You might think you could overcome the lack of flavor by adding more pumpkin purée to your recipe, but you'd be mistaken: By the time you've added enough purée to taste it, your baked good would have a soggy texture on account of all that moisture.

Why is my pumpkin bread so heavy? ›

Pumpkin bread can become dense if there is not enough hydration or wet ingredients in the recipe. Another cause is overcooking the bread which can cause it to dry out. Remember, it's always easy to keep cooking if it isn't done but impossible to take cooking time back.

Why is my pumpkin bread gummy? ›

If your pumpkin spice bread is gummy or undercooked in the center, it's typically because it either 1) needed more time to bake in the oven or 2) the batter was too wet, which led the bread to collapse in on itself a bit (this happens if you measure ingredients by volume, rather than by weight: it's easy to ...

How do you get rid of dark spots with baking soda? ›

Baking soda has a natural bleaching effect that can lighten the color of your skin and reduce the visibility of dark spots. It does so by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its color. By using baking soda for dark spots regularly, you can achieve a more even and glowing skin tone.

What happens if you use soda instead of baking powder? ›

However, if you're in a pinch, the substitution is one teaspoon baking soda equals three teaspoons baking powder. Baking soda is also much stronger than baking powder and, by trying to provide enough leavening, you may wind up with an unpleasant metallic, salty taste in the final baked product.

Why does my banana bread taste like baking soda? ›

Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is the raising agent and this can sometimes taste bitter or soapy if the wrong quantity is used.

Why is my pumpkin pie still wet in the middle? ›

Why Didn't My Pumpkin Pie Set? You're ready to serve your homemade pumpkin pie, but when you try to cut it, it's too runny to get any clean slices. Why this happens: The pie was underbaked, or the oven temperature wasn't high enough. Taking the pie out of the oven prematurely is a very easy mistake to make.

Why is my bread doughy in the middle? ›

Air circulating around the loaf allows the steam built up inside the bread to evaporate. If the bread is kept in its baking pan, it will become soggy and look and taste doughy. If the bread has not finished baking by the maximum time indicated in the recipe, the oven thermostat may be off.

How to know if pumpkin bread is undercooked? ›

The most important thing is to test with a toothpick before pulling the bread out. Every oven is different and times can differ. If a toothpick comes out clean it means the bread is fully cooked and will not sink.
