What is Tikka Masala Spice Mix?

Tikka is a famous Indian dish prepared with a special tikka masala spice mix or masala powder. Here is the homemade recipe for tikka masala mix that will prepare by combining Indian spices and grind them to make a fine powder. You can conveniently use this powder to make quick tikka marination and prepare tikka masala curry.

Homemade tikka spice mix is free from artificial flavor, and preservatives. You can make it at home in just 15 minutes. Gather the masala, roast and make fine powder and add with seasoning spices to make a perfect tikka masala flavor.

I personally prefer to make homemade tikka masala rather using store-bought. Tikka recipes prepared with homemade tikka masala spice mix have better taste and aroma compared with store-bought. Once you make it, you will feel the difference.

Ingredients

To make this homemade tikka masala spice mix, we need cumin seeds, whole coriander seeds, fennel seeds, green cardamom, black cardamom, cinnamon sticks, black peppercorns, cloves and aniseed to roast the spices. Then grind it and add seasoning ingredients includes salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder, ginger and garlic powder, mango powder and papaya powder. Add all these ingredients with roasted and ground masala and mix well.

How To Make Tikka Masala Spice Mix

Step 1: Roast the Masala

In a preheated skillet roast these ingredients on low heat until they become aromatic.

  • 2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoon whole coriander seeds
  • ½ teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 8 green cardamoms with pods
  • 5 black cardamoms
  • 3 inches cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 9 cloves
  • 2 Star Aniseed

Step 2: Grind the masala

Grind all the spices in grinder to make fine powder.

Step 3: Seasoning

In a bowl, add ground masala along with;

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika powder
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon ginger powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon mango powder
  • ⅓ teaspoon dried papaya powder

Mix all the spices with a spoon and store in an airtight jar.

How to Use Tikka Masala Spice Mix

  • In a bowl, add ½ cup yogurt and 2 tablespoon tikka spice mix. Give it a good mix.
  • Apply on 500 gm chicken pieces (skinless, boneless, or with bones).
  • Marinate for an hour.
  • Thread the chicken on skewers and spray oil on skewers from all sides.
  • Now bake in the oven, pan fry on a skillet on the stovetop, or even bbq or grill the chicken. You can also air fry at 200C to get the perfect roasted chicken in 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Serve with veg salad, naan, raita, or chutney.

How to Store

Store the tikka masala in an airtight glass jar for 6 months in the refrigerator. You can also store it in your pantry at room temperature for 3 months. Don't extend the shelf life as there are no preservatives added.
Never insert a wet spoon in the jar. Once used then cover the lid and keep it in a cool place.

  • Use the proper ratio of all the ingredients and spices to make the perfect flavor of tikka masala. Also, use the appropriate quantity of masala. 1 tablespoon is enough for 250 gm of chicken, red meat, tofu, or paneer.
  • Homemade tikka masala is free from sulphites so it's better to make it at home to ensure healthy cooking practices.
  • Never add water to tikka masala, always add in yogurt or in oil to marinate.
  • Avoid adding a wet spoon to tikka masala powder.
